Choosing between lactulose or Glucose
Breath testing for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), measuring the gut bacterial fermentation products hydrogen and methane, is a robust method of assessing gut microbial activity. Breath gas production within 100 minutes of ingesting carbohydrates is diagnostic of SIBO.
What is SIBO?
SIBO, or Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, occurs when there's an excessive growth of bacteria in the small intestine. These bacteria can ferment carbohydrates, including glucose, leading to a variety of symptoms. Some common symptoms of SIBO related to glucose fermentation may include:
Abdominal Pain and Discomfort: This is often described as cramping or aching in the abdomen, which can range from mild to severe.
Bloating and Gas: Excessive bacterial fermentation of glucose can produce gases such as hydrogen and methane, leading to bloating, distention, and increased flatulence.
Diarrhea or Constipation: Changes in bowel habits, including diarrhea, constipation, or alternating between the two, are common symptoms of SIBO.
Nausea and Vomiting: Some individuals with SIBO may experience nausea, particularly after eating foods containing glucose or other fermentable carbohydrates.
Malabsorption and Nutritional Deficiencies: SIBO can interfere with the absorption of nutrients from food, leading to deficiencies in vitamins (especially fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K), minerals, and other essential nutrients.
Fatigue and Weakness: Nutritional deficiencies and malabsorption can contribute to fatigue, weakness, and overall feelings of lethargy.
Weight Loss: Chronic SIBO can lead to unintentional weight loss due to malabsorption of nutrients and alterations in metabolism.
Other Symptoms: Some individuals with SIBO may experience additional symptoms such as heartburn, acid reflux, joint pain, skin rashes, or brain fog.
It's important to note that symptoms of SIBO can vary widely among individuals, and not everyone with SIBO will experience all of these symptoms. Additionally, symptoms of SIBO can overlap with those of other gastrointestinal conditions, making diagnosis challenging.
If you suspect you may have SIBO or are experiencing persistent gastrointestinal symptoms, it's essential to consult with a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and diagnosis. Treatment for SIBO typically involves a combination of antibiotics, dietary modifications (such as a low FODMAP diet), probiotics, and other interventions aimed at reducing bacterial overgrowth and alleviating symptoms
